Animation in Education #TysonBROKEmyheart
This is my favorite part of the semester because it's when I'm bored and stressed at the same time. What am I boring myself with? Procrastination. You ever notice how procrastinating is soooo boring. I will find literally ANYTHING to keep myself from getting something done. Like watching Crash Course or Ted Ed. Videos that SLIGHTLY relate to what I should actually be doing so I don't feel so bad about not doing what I should be doing. Ya feel? Like I should be studying for my Astronomy quiz next week but why don't I watch a 20-minute video about stars and pretend that's the same as studying. Then youtube suggests a makeup tutorial for makeup I cannot afford and I watch that too. I am stuck in a deep web of youtube auto plays and articles my friends share on facebook and I'm somehow drained you guys. Emotionally drained. Can you believe this stuff with Neil Degrasse Tyson... I'm sobbing. Another man has managed to break my heart this semester. Lord why. WHICH BRINGS US TO THE DISCUSSION OF EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS. Neil was once my go-to. rip. HE HAD ANIMATION IN HIS SHOW. THIS RELATES TO THE COURSE. You guys, humor me in my time of need.
A lot of educational videos that are popular tend to incorporate animation. Either fully animated or some sort of hybrid of animation. But why? Well first, I think it's because educational videos are much more interesting when the student has a visual aid that is fun to look at. No kid wants to look at a talking head for too long. Animation and graphics are a great way to demonstrate ideas that seem foreign or confusing. Proton and electrons are invisible to the human eye but when watching a visual representation of something so small, it helps a student conceptualize. By why so popular now? I think another reason animation has become so popular in animated videos is because animation has become relativley cheap. The old model of Bill Nye the Science Guy's fun toys and models are old fashioned because they require the production value to invent physical visual aids. And finally, I think maybe the reason animation is so often used in educational videos because of our cultural conception that animations are for kids. What are your thoughts? How do you use animation to procrastinate when you're feeling stressed?
(here's a fun Ted Ed to procrastinate with!):
