Bendy and the Ink Machine
This week I wanted to discus a fabulous indie game called Bendy and the Ink Machine. It's final chapter came out last month and it's time we talked about it. Bendy is an interesting game both in it's animation style and in it's story.
Bendy and the Ink Machine actually tells the tale of an animation studio gone wrong! Our protagonist Henry, returns to the old studio he used to work at. The studio is sadly going under and his old partner Joey Drew has invited Henry to come to the studio to "see what he's been working on". It's there Henry discovers the studio is as abandoned as he thought. It seems Joey had been working on an ink machine a machine that could bring is animated characters to life! But something is not quite right.
The animation style for the game is incredibly interesting a very cartoony black and white style brought into a 3D space.

It's a simple sleek design that adds an edge of horror and a strong sense of character to the environment. It's a clear visual identity for the game that makes it instantly recognizable.
The story however is also rather interesting not only in it's horror aspects but in it's lore and backstory. Joey Drew Studios made cartoons in the early 1920's. Their Bendy cartoons weathered the switch from silent to sound. But as technology advanced and tastes changed, the series and the studio slowly declined. But at it's height the studio had all sorts of merch even a theme park (obligatory nod to Disney)
There's plenty to love about this game especially in what is says about animation and what it is able to do with it's own designs and animations. What do you think? Have you played the game? Would you?
(Here is the trailer for the first chapter of the game. It doesn't give to much away but shows off the great art style and just a hint of that greater narrative I was talking about. Enjoy!)
