Sound In Animation
Something that has interested me is the use of sound in the medium of animation. In particular I have been thinking about how sync sound in animation is different from live action footage. In general it seems that with sound in animation there is way more room for suspended disbelief. For example, a sound effect from a live action film has to be believable because it is made by a "real" situation. In animation however, the audience will give the animator the ability to create their own sounds for the scene on screen. With this comes the ability for animators to create brand new ideas on screen and give them their own specific sounds or sound queues. I think this is a vital part of what separates animation from live action film. Ever since it was invented, sync sound has been a vital part of film and in many senses gives life to the image on the screen especially in animated films. The ability to immerse an audience into a new, completely curated animated film using sound in my opinion is vital to the success of this medium.
Not only sound effects are important however, music is also heavily used to set tones in animation. As with live action, music can be used along with an image to completely change the tone of a scene. I think that with animation, music has more freedom to truly change a scene and create new moods. One important technique that can do this is implementing music that would not normally be thought of as accompanying a certain scene and using it to create a unique mood. I think this technique is particularly effective in animation as the movements and motions within the animation can be directly correlated to the music.
