The Grinch wasn't bad
All I heard about The Grinch remake were things along the lines of it missing the mark completely. That being said, I still wanted to see it for Tyler the Creator's soundtrack and to see how Illumination studios interpreted one of my all time favorite Christmas stories.
I went into the theater with very low expectations. I was expecting something okay, but a film that anyone over the age of seven would have a hard time enjoying--much like The Secret Life of Pets in my opinion. However, I was pleased to find that this was in fact a heartwarming film for the whole family, especially considering the film's focus on the importance of family and togetherness during the holidays.
This film was definitely meant for a younger audience, but the twists they put on the already beloved story were honestly good ones. They really used the animation to their advantage with all of the gadgets that the Grinch used to do crazy tasks . A new character was also introduced from the original story, which added another fun element.
One thing that went above the top was the animation for this film. The snow on the ground and trees, each character's hair, the lighting in each scene that really emphasized the snow and the characters' actions. The snow on each character's hair/fur was also incredibly detailed. The greatest thing about this film was that so much detail was put into every little section of animation, but at the same time Dr. Suess' whimsical world wasn't compromised by the animation or the style used. I might just be a sucker for a wholesome family movie, but I think that The Grinch was a lot better than most people seem to think.
You saying this is definitely interesting to me. I haven't seen the film but I also didn't want to. I didn't think that it was going to be good at all. It kind of connects to my post from last week where I talked about remakes and sequels. I feel like after a film is made and it becomes as popular as the Grinch, sometimes they should just leave it at one film and not ruin it, in a way, by making more. However, now that you said it actually was decent I'm interested to see if I would agree. I may just have to see it!
ReplyDeleteShoot! Interesting review. I should give it a watch.
ReplyDeleteNice review! I was so excited to see this movie because the Grinch has always been one of my favorite stories, but I am a bit nervous to see how they will portray it. I'm worried that it'll be animated more like the minion movies and they will suck the Christmas and story out of it, but this review is giving me more hope which makes me more excited to see it this upcoming weekend!
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting review to me because I felt the complete opposite after seeing it. To me, the new Grinch felt uninspired and boring. The set design was a lot less whimsical and fantastical than what I was expecting given the potential in animation. But then again, I am huge fan of the 2000 live action version and I know nothing could ever top that in my eyes.
ReplyDeleteOh I LOVE the 2000 version and I totally agree. I think that it took awhile for the film to pick up, and it was kind of boring for a good portion. However, I think that at it's heart it did a great job of catering more towards a child audience and it had a really heartwarming story. I don't disagree that Whoville could've been a little more whimsical, but I still stand by the film bing everything it needed to be.
