The Grinch (2018) Sucks
The Grinch (2018) is Illumination's latest cash-grab before Minions 2 comes out where they completely butcher Dr. Seuss' beloved classic. One thing I noticed before I even saw the movie was after watching the trailer, I saw that Max the dog looked almost exactly the same as Max the dog from another one of Illumination's movies, The Secret Life of Pets, with a few minor tweaks to the design. I also noticed that throughout the movie that background characters were reused countless times, though I guess I shouldn't be surprised seeing how it isn't the first time Illumination has done this. I'm looking at you Sing (2016).
The message is also absolutely ruined from some of the changes they made to the narrative. Having the Grinch only be stealing Christmas because he was neglected weakens the entire theme behind the meaning of Christmas. The whole point of the original story is that the Grinch believes that Christmas is all about presents and commercialism. But when he sees that the Who's remain unchanged by the removal of all their gifts, he comes to realize that he was in fact wrong about the true meaning of Christmas. Turning his motivation into a simple revenge story takes what was a heartwarming, poignant message and turns it into something much more clichéd and formulaic. I really did not enjoy this movie and I'm getting really sick of Illumination as a company. They clearly just want to make money and are showing that they're willing to milk any franchise dry as long as it makes them money, *cough* Minions 2.

I see so much hate towards this new grinch, and I don’t see the point. Who cares if it’s a so-called money grab? I want to make money, so if I had the platform to do so, I would try to do something that would make me money. Oh well, enough of that. I was laughing from the start of The Grinch and I don’t regret giving them my money for it.
