Stephen Hillenburg - from marine biologist to creative genius

As many of you may have heard, “Spongebob Squarepants” creator Stephen Hillenburg passed away on November 26th. One of the most famous tv shows was created by a man who would have never guessed he would have come to create the show. Stephen Hillenburg was working as a marine biology instructor when he made “The Intertidal Zone,” an educational comic book teaching people about tide pools and the interesting characters that live under the sea. Hillenburg fell in love with animation and took classes at Cal Arts, in which he made animated short films. He later discovered his old comic book and decided to combine his love or animation and marine life and create the hit tv show “Spongebob Squarepants.” In 1999 the first episode aired on Nickelodeon. The show exploded winning tons of awards, having feature films and even a broadway show.

I think its fascinating how Stephen Hillenburg kind of fell into making Spongebob. You would think that the show is made by a professional comedian. It just makes you think how anything is possible if you are really passionate about it. An amazing show I will never grow old of watching. Rest in peace Stephen Hillenburg.

  1. I'm so sad about Stephen Hillenburg's passing. That is crazy to think that he never had the intention of creating Spongebob, I feel like with a lot of series the animators have known a story they've wanted to animate or have been doodling all the time. I also had literally no idea that it had a Broadway show, that's wild!
