Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has the Most Unique Animation I've seen All Year

I just saw Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and I have to say that this is without a doubt the best animated film I've seen all year. The animation in this movie is entirely its own style of comic book like designs, combined with 2D cartoons, and anime. I completely embraces the wacky style and world it has created and I have never seen an animated movie that has looked like this. At least, not to this degree. The characters will often have their thoughts displayed in a text box above their head as if they are actually in a comic book, and to top it all off, the character's backstories are literally explained by opening one of their comic book issues and reading through it while the character narrates their origin. The film has taken the look, feeling, and tone of a comic book, and has completely embraced it into crafting one of the most beautifully animated films I have ever seen.

    i agree! i hope to see it getting some recognition in the coming awards season but we'll see. it seems like the oscar is basically the pixar award at this point so it will be interesting to see how it stacks up against incredibles 2

    Oh I really hope it wins something this award season! This move was fantastic you could tell they love spiderman and understood the fan base, poking fun at the overly explained origin story everyone can practically recite by heart and recreating some classic spiderman memes.

    Shoutout to how the animators were able to use different visual style for the different Spider-people. I loved how Spider-Ham and SP//dr both had their own distinct looks, which I felt gave them both even more personality. Oh, and seeing thicc Kingpin was a joy.

This weekend, I watched the hit 2005 animated movie Bratz: Rock Angelz. This movie was one of the first Bratz films in CGI, and let me tell you- the plot is ALL OVER THE PLACE. Does Animation Have to Make You Laugh?

Something that I have taken note of lately is how you barely ever find any mainstream animation that doesn't have some semblance of comedy integrated into it. For example, when was the last time you saw a Disney movie that didn't make you laugh (or at least try to)? And when was the last time you saw an adult cartoon that wasn't making a joke every 10 seconds. My point is, mainstream animation has seemed to simplify itself into a single tone: Comedic. Even in the films that are primarily covering serious topics there is typically a comic relief character to add some lighthearted fun to the film. But do all films need this? Is it necessary for all animation to try and entertain us in the exact same way? My answer is no and I wish that more animation studios and their production companies would realize this. She-ra is my new favorite gay icon

She-ra is a Netflix original spinoff of the he-man franchise. I was never a fan of the original show, but I thought I'd check she-ra out and I'm glad I did. It's a fun show, and I wish we had more like it when we were kids. It's one of the few kids shows where women outnumber men in the lead cast, and there's so much gay but it's not like "woah look at all this gay!" It's a lot more subtle, and I think that's great. Of course, there are more seasons to come, but I'm glad that the first one showed as much restraint as it did. I feel like if we treat LGBT people as special, it'll only perpetuate the idea that they're something "other" than straight people. It's important that our pop culture reflects the idea that gay people are just, you know, people. Take all that with a grain of salt though, I'm a straight cis white guy. I just wanted to start a conversation.
