She-Ra and the Princesses of Great Character Design
Now we've chatted about how great the reboot of She-Ra is in other posts but here I want to focus specifically on it's amazing character design. She-Ra has great character design. And specifically much much improved character design then it's original. Lets compare!
Here is the original:

Now here is the reboot:

Now the original came out in the 80s and had a fairly low budget. Designed to sell toys the characters all look relatively the same with only different hair and clothes to tell them apart. Heck they're even all relatively the same height! But in the reboot, it's a whole different story. Each character looks unique and instantly recognizable. On top of that their powers are relatively easy to decipher with out being over stated. Color scheming is good and the clothing is suited for their personalities and makes sense for the amount of activity they do daily. Our fighters aren't dragged down by heels and skirts.
On top of that the new version of our characters are diverse in height, body type, and ethnicity. There is some good representation, most girls can find themselves or their friends in and amongst these characters. In short we went from barbie dolls with interchangeable hair and skirts to actual people.
Going back to individual character design I just love love love She-Ra's character design. They all have unique skills not just in their magic but in their physical atributes as well. One character has hair that she can move like a limb even able to walk with it and make it into a chair. Scorpia has lobster arms!

The cast of characters is just so interesting and compelling. Some of this was present in the original but not fully utilized probably due to the limited animation.
Well worth a look, I highly recommend She-Ra and the Princesses of Power for it's character design, story, animation, and representation it's a fantastic show!

I watched this show with my sister over break since we both watched the original She-Ra and
ReplyDeleteHe-Man cartoons and one of the things that instantly grabbed me was the character designs. Like you said, they are so much more diverse looking and recognizable which is a welcome change to the original designs which looked like one of those barbie dress up games.
The color palate for this version of She-Ra is also an improvement. The new one being very based on individual characters but utilizing a good combination of colors from that character's spectrum while the original was very much an 80s assault of bright colors in every aspect for the majority of the show.
I loved watching She-Ra as a kid with my mom, and I'm really digging the reboot's new animation style!
