Reused Assets

A lot of you guys probably know about this, but I thought this was a pretty good video summarizing and discussing Disney's reuse of animation over the years. We've talked a lot about remakes and so on... seems relevant to think about how 2D animation can also be copied. Maybe it's less of a clear line between "old fine art" and "new digital or live action remakes", and more about fostering creativity in general.

  1. I saw this video a few months ago and it struck me as so strange that the studio we associate with original animation throughout the years basically plagiarized itself over and over again back during its "golden years". Then I took a moment to really think about it, and they are pretty much following the same model as they have been, in the sense that maybe Disney never was original in the first place. The material for their biggest cash cow, Marvel, is basically just reproducing the same super-hero movie over and over with a different protagonist to sell. Star Wars The Force Awakens was just a new A New Hope, and The Last Jedi was just a new bad film (don't @ me). Pixar's films haven't been all that original for a while, *ahem* Toy Story 4 (!), Incredibles 2, Cars 3, the list goes on. Someone get Bobby Iger on the phone and tell him to maybe get some new ideas.

  2. I really don't see how one could chalk this up to anything but laziness. Enough said.
