Live Action Sonic the Hedgehog

Here we go again. I'm sure by now most of you have seen the abomination that is the Sonic the Hedgehog live action poster. Do we really need this? Who is going to pay to see that movie? Ok, I will. But, come on, why? WHY? Are we really so out of ideas that we have to make movies out of Sega games? And why is it classified as live action? There's gonna be more animation in that film than all the Jurassic Park films combined. I seriously hope this isn't what the film industry is going to become, because if that's the case, I'm going into agriculture.

But, actually, Jim Carrey as Egghead is going to be awesome.

  1. I had been hoping that this movie was a joke for so long but it's not it's here. Also I know that we don't really know what Sonic and the other characters will look like completely yet, but I just know they're going to be weird and hyper realistic like the new Detective Pikachu movie and that's someone no one need to be burdened with seeing.

  2. Couldn't be more correct, especially about Jim Carrey. I think the main issue here is recognition of not only what medium characters work best in, but what style they belong to. People seem to have the same reaction to this every time. Look no further than the live-action Super Mario Bros. film---Mario doesn't look "right" in the real world. Even in recent video games, in which you see every hair on his head, things seem a bit off; I don't think Mario is meant to be seen in HD. Same goes for live action HD Pokemon: in the game, be it video or card, they look either cute or cool. In the film, they just look creepy. Even seeing Dick Tracy in live action was super weird and offputting, whereas when he's drawn in the comics, he fits the world that surrounds him and everything makes sense. David Mazzuchelli has a whole comic essay on this that's included in most reprintings of "Batman: Year One"---essentially, he notes that when Batman starts to be drawn too realistic, you begin to notice the flaws in the whole setup of the character. You must answer questions that audiences shouldn't even be asking themselves, such as "What type of cloth is Batman's cape"? When drawn in not-nearly-as-realistic stylings, his cape is just stark black and can blend in perfectly with the shadows and what not. Batman works well when translated to live action because he's pretty realistic, but Mario? Dick Tracy? Sonic? No. Not at all.
