Family guy's appeal

I have always been a Seth Macfarlane fan and have worshipped family guy since I was ten years old. What I have always found hilarious about the tv show is its ability to poke fun at everyday norms. Something as simple as falling over and scrapping your knee can be made into a two-minute segment of a character falling over and dragging out the whole process we all go through when we scrape our knee. Macfarlane's ability to simply mirror everyday life of the average American and make fun of it is genius.

  1. As much as I used to enjoy Family Guy, growing up has made me realize that it really isn't all that funny. That 2 minute bit about scraping your knee, that's just a drawn out bit that overplays its welcome within the first 30 seconds. There are far more interesting comedic animated shows (Bojack, Big Mouth, South Park) that do the poking fun at every day life to a much greater point. F is for Family drives way harder at the corrupt Family dynamics of the ordinary American house hold than the Griffins do just constantly ripping on Meg for 13 seasons. I don't think MacFarlane developed his style past the first 5 seasons and has just been doing the same bits for so long. Sorry to disagree. We can still be friends.

  2. I agree with Max, when I was younger Family Guy was the funniest show I had watched, but every time I catch an episode now it makes me wonder why I thought it was so great. Like the character's personalities are humorous, and there's no doubt that there are a few intelligent jokes in the show- but overall it's "stupid" humor. Also like Max say, F is For Family is so much better than Family Guy if you are looking for an animated comedy about a family. It's crude, but intelligent. Definitely takes a more mature audience than Family Guy to understand.

  3. When I think of Family Guy, good quality satirical humor doesn't really come to mind. Despite that, I still believe the show is good for slapstick, offensive and just flat out obnoxious humor. I personally like Macfarlane's American Dad much better, as Stan is just such a big asshole that I can't help but laugh. His shows are a big hit or miss honestly, it all comes down to maturity and taste in comedy.

  4. I am a very big Family Guy fan and I think its humor is very valid, but I think South Park criticizes their humor very accurately. For instance, when South Park makes fun of something, they make fun of it for the entire episode and it takes an entire 22 minutes to have a real commentary on whatever the subject matter is. However, Family Guy will randomly bring in things to make fun of that have nothing to do with the story or characters at all. A good test for this is to think about a joke from South Park and a joke from Family Guy. Got it? Good. Now try to remember which episode it is from. With South Park, it's easy to place, because every small joke lends to criticizing what they're criticizing in the episode at large, but in Family Guy, the jokes (while hysterical) are lost in a hodgepodge of unrelated material. Much of the adult animation world (The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Beavis and Butthead) agree and support South Park's depiction of Family Guy and are kinda pissed that Family Guy gets all the ratings it does even with such lazy (but funny!) writing.

That being said, I think you could look at this with a brighter lens and say that this gives Family Guy a type of humor entirely unique to the show, which I think it also true.
