Did anyone else feel weird about the Princesses in Wreck It Ralph 2?

This is obviously going to be spoilery, so look away if you haven't seen it!

I was just wondering if anyone else was disappointed by the inclusion of the Disney princesses in the second Wreck It Ralph? I was one of the people who was really excited to see them all together, but I didn't like how their scenes actually turned out in the finished film. I just felt like they were so collectively ditzy and too stereotypically princess-y, which I was hoping Wreck it Ralph would try to break down instead of uphold. I was especially disappointed that the "casual" wear was something Vanellope had to introduce them to. I wanted to see them out of their princess personas acting like real people, and that's honestly what I expected, but it wasn't what I got. I guess it's cool that they saved Ralph in the end, but the whole "oh, a MAN in need of saving? it's our time to shine!" was so on the nose that it felt disingenuous and kind of like a mockery? Also, the Brave joke felt like it was crossing a line considering the history of that movie.

I want to believe that I'm being pessimistic about this, so I need someone to please convince me that I'm wrong! Did anyone really like the princesses in this film?

  1. I personally did like them! I wrote my blog post about this film as well. I do wish they were in the film more, but I liked the fact that they were a bit "ditzy" because I feel like it played into the joke of princess movies being kind of ridiculous. Especially poking fun at the random singing that happens in all of those films. But that's just me!

    2. I agree with Alex on this one! I totally see and understand what you didn't like about the princesses, but I actually enjoyed how "princess-y" they were behind the scenes in the movie! It was just silly in my opinion and I thought it was super funny how the princesses still had no common sense in this film! Plus I really enjoyed the random singing joke, I thought it was just very clever and cute!

    3. Yeah, I'm totally torn because it's not necessarily a bad thing for them to be princess-y! I think it was just different from what I wanted so that's why I was so disappointed. Maybe if I watch it again now I'll think differently.

  2. I am with you Elaine! I had the misfortune of watching this movie and I was also appalled by the princess bit. It felt like it was trying to be very progressive and it failed horribly. Them saving the day was a complete ex-machina that didn't really make any sense.

    1. Yeah! I get what they were trying to do, I just don't think it they pulled it off.

  3. I definitely agree with you! Although I really loved the idea of getting them all together, it did fall a little short. I feel like they should of made them seem more independent I guess. Especially in today's society where we are striving for gender equality!

    1. Yes exactly! Just something to subvert the idea of the princesses as we know them.

  4. The princess scene definitely rubbed me the wrong way too. I understand that Disney was trying to poke fun at the tropes it put in the princess genre, but beyond the princesses, the whole movie just felt like Disney was trying so hard to prove that h\they were hip with the kids and in on all the jokes about their characters and the internet. Also Jasmine asking Vanellope if she was a princess because she had daddy issues made me sooo uncomfortable.
