Bird Karma Bringing Back 2D Animation

I found this article about the first project to be released from DreamWorks’ new animated shorts program. The film is titled Bird Karma and has a classic hand-drawn look to CG animation over watercolor backgrounds. It tells the story of a long-legged bird who becomes enamored with a colored fish. The five-minute film has won numerous awards and is making a play at a short film Oscar this year.

The article features a video of how the film was brought to life. It follows the process from storyboards to a rough animatic, character animation, and finally a completed product. Then the article goes into the production story of the film and an interview with the director.

This story relates to what we just talked about in class because we are now seeing a return to 2D animation by incorporating it with modern 3D technology. I think it is fascinating how we are reverting to 2D after such a large push to modern modes of production. I think the blend of animation really works in this film and gives it a really interesting aesthetic. What do you think? If this film does pick up the Oscar will it encourage more production companies to incorporate and push 2D animation in their projects?

  1. Growing up with the classic Pixar movies like Toy Story and Monsters Inc, I have always been swayed more towards the 3D CGI animated movies over the 2D classic Disney movies. Despite that, it would be nice to see a return of 2D animated films on the big screen and in award ceremonies. A different aesthetic every now and then is a nice change of pace, especially due to the flooding of 3D CG blockbusters nowadays
