Animation Voice Actors
Why is an animation film more captivating and successful when it uses star actors? Why do we, as the audience, become more invested when we watch the new Pikachu trailer and hear Ryan Reynold's voice or see Beyonce and Donald Glover's names come up during the "Lion King" trailer? I read an article the other day about the new "Lion King" and it spent the majority of the article discussing all the famous actors involve, even I got excited. Is it because we feel more comfortable when we're able to rely on the familiar in a new abstract space? Is it just how the industry is able to make that translation between live-action and animation?
I've thought about this before too. It seems that people want someone familiar that they can hear and pick out, since animated characters are things we've never seen before, whereas actors in films are seen all the time. I think a lot of people are such big fans of certain actors that it gets them that much more excited for a movie if that actor's in it--even seeing the film for the actor rather than for the film itself.
ReplyDeleteI think the excitement comes from the fact that we're confident these stars will do a good job and entertain us because we've seen them do it before. We're not as excited about an unknown because we don't what to expect from them. I hear Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu's voice and I think: "Ryan Reynolds is a great actor, and he's funny." That makes me want to go see the film that much more. I do want to see Detective Pikachu mainly because of Ryan Reynolds. I think he'll be the best part of the movie.
