A New Academy Award Category?
As I was looking through the blog posts I came across a very interesting post that talked about voice acting. He talked about how voice acting seems to be glossed over pretty often. I never took the time to realize how important voice acting is and how it is nearly everywhere. From video games to our favorite cartoons and animations.
My question is, do you think that voice acting should get their own category in the Oscars? I'm not sure if that would ever happen, but I feel that it would be a super cool concept. I know that there are protests to add stunts and stunt doubles into the Academy Awards so I truly feel like voice acting can be a category one day.

I think that voice acting definitely is something that gets glossed over. I don't know if it should get an academy award category, only because there are only so many animated movies at the oscars/movies that use voice acting. In the future I feel like that's definitely a possibility though. It's crazy how much actors put into voice acting--I find it so entertaining watching videos of actors acting with their full bodies in the voice studio, even though they have nothing to work with.
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking about this a few days ago. I think voice acting and stunt performers should both have Oscar's categories before "popular film" gets one. Those are both specific aspects of acting that are just as important as traditional methods and I totally think there should be the same type of awards for them.
ReplyDeleteI think that while it would be nice to give out such an award, it runs the risk of going in the direction of the Emmys where there are literally dozens of categories, almost none of which are televised. Ultimately, there's an unfortunate hierarchy when it comes to the different occupations in the film process - that being writers, directors, and actors. Now I believe that the Oscars should do what the Tonys have done for the past few years - film the award win and show a quick clip after a commercial break. This way it doesn't add more minutes to the already overly-long event, and gives a moment for these people to relish in their (usually) deserved win. Thankfully, there are the Annie Awards (https://annieawards.org/nominees), which do in fact have categories in voice acting for TV and film. I also think that in a way, it's better to win a voice acting award at the Annies, surrounded by people in that little niche community, rather than having a bunch of Hollywood bigwigs decide to throw the little guys a bone.
ReplyDeleteI think a voice-acting Oscar would be a great way to bring some attention to the actors who have an arguably harder job because they cannot use their physicality to enhance their performance and must rely entirely on their voices. While animated movies would most likely dominate this category, they are not the only films that have voice acting. Star Wars is quite famous for voice actors like James Earl Jones. I think it's unfair that animated films are segregated to their own category and I think it would have a very positive impact if this became a real award. I believe that by awarding what would very commonly be animated movies something for their voice actors, it would open more people up to the idea that animation can be for adults as well as kids. This award would show people that animated characters don't have to lack maturity and can stand on their own as fully fleshed out, made possible through the voices of these actors.
