Why all the fighting?

Anime is known for its major fight scenes that show extreme power, followed by extreme closeups of a sweating dude's face, with small tears in his/her eyes. Why, in anime, is Naruto more common than realistic animation depicting action? Why is anime always so extreme in its fight scenes?

  1. While I'm not 100% sure why fighting is so prevalently featured in anime films and television, I'm glad that it is because it can add a unique challenge for animators to create something interesting. It also reminds me a lot of the dance films we watched towards the start of the semester that exist to capture/emulate movement and express things without words. An example that comes to mind is Avatar The Last Airbender, and although it is not a true anime, a lot of people mistake it for an categorize it as such. Fighting is featured heavily in ATLA, as it takes place during wartimes, but the fighting is interesting because it is largely based in the elemental bending style of the characters fighting. This is further interesting because each of the elemental bending styles are based on a different style of martial arts fighting, that help to define the characteristics that each element favors, and as such have different ways of moving.
