When creating film categories in class, I found myself drawing many comparisons between Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir . In our group we discussed how the content of the films were similar, but served different purposes and thus was presented in different ways. Both stories were deeply personal and based on real people and experiences. They are anti-war films and depict the story of young people escaping war and facing their pasts. The use of animation as a medium is integral to both films as many of the scenes that are depicted would be impossible without them. For example, many of the battle scenes that take place, or with Persepolis the women removing their Hijabs. Animation gives the filmmakers the artistic freedom to not just portray historical events, but to also portray how people felt about them. Where the two films differed, however, was that Persepolis was much more humorous and could be suitable for younger audiences, whereas though Waltz with Bashir had humor, it was v...
If by "focus on film" you mean "feature films" then I don't agree. If by film you mean independent shorts, then maybe, but we've talked about several of the series on this list and many of them while not mentioned directly fall within the categories we discussed. The list is a great example of an aesthetic statement of value. What do they mean by Top? Top grossing? Most watched? Longest airing? Authors liked them? Great post and I'm also curious to hear what people think. Never understood My Little Pony, but I have grown up friends who love it!
ReplyDeleteA fair and interesting list. I was glad to say that I could recognize a majority of the shows on it. I also found it cool how the list included anime too, which usually isn't grouped amongst American cartoons. I'm not sure, but I feel like it wasn't a ranking. Instead, it was just a list of the best 50 animated shows in no particular order, but if that isn't the case then I would have a ton of disagreements with this list. The fact that they included Teen Titans Go over the original is already a cause for concern, but I complain enough about that show on here, haha.
ReplyDeleteI've always found these kinds of lists super hyperbolic, because it's never advertised as "Our Top 50", it's "THE Top 50". Like before clicking on the link, I had a few scattered ideas of what would make the top entries. To my surprise, shows like The Venture Bros. and Futurama were left in the dust in favor of such enduring classics as Teen Titans Go. But of course, these lists are inherently subjective. I know that I wouldn't in a million years but Rocky and Bullwinkle so far ahead of Samurai Jack, but I'm not a member of the IndieWire staff, so any problem I have is rendered moot. Another issue with these lists is the amount of recency bias included. Of the top 15 entries, about half are from the last 10 years alone. It's belief that it takes a few years before a society can more fairly compare these recent works to their older contemporaries.
