The Toy Story 4 Trailer Was Rudely Interrupted By a Spork
There are two things that defined my youth. One was Lady Gaga’s album Artpop, released in 2013 (now available on iTunes). The other is the Toy Story franchise. I was so obsessed with the first two films that my mother bought me a Woody hat and I wore it every day like a cartoon character.
Now, as a fully developed cartoon character I still stan this franchise. So you can imagine my delight when I woke up this morning to see that the first teaser trailer for Toy Story 4 was released. And it was rudely interrupted by a spork.
The trailer is nothing more than a slow-motion shot of the core cast holding hands and skipping to the song Both Sides Now by Judy Collins. Until we see a new character who is literally a spork with pipe cleaner arms, mismatching googly eyes, and popsicle sticks attached to gum for legs.
I was hoping the teaser would give some context or hint to what the story will be but it didn’t. All it did was confuse me. So I went online to investigate and it turns out the spork is a character named “Forky” voiced by Tony Hale, and he plays a key role in the new story. To coincide with the trailer release Pixar unveiled the official synopsis for the film:
"Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy."
In my opinion, Toy Story 3 was the perfect bookend to Woody and Buzz’s story. And based off of this synopsis I’m skeptical if this was the right direction to go with the franchise. Despite all of this nagging I will still see the film because I love this franchise and the characters are are so strong. But this is a weak beginning to the films ad campaign.

Theres this sense of protectiveness that I get from hearing this. I didn't see the trailer yet, but I can imagine your dismay of seeing a spork. Honestly, I don't really want another character to be introduced... Toy Story is perfect the way it is now. It's like when a new person moves to your town, and your friend group wants to include them, but you're perfectly content with how your group is now
ReplyDeleteToy Story 3 did seem like a perfect way to wrap things up. I suppose anything that can evoke imagination in a child's eyes the way a toy does can be considered a toy, so that is a rather interesting topic for this upcoming film. But what does it mean in terms of the series? Will it have a way to end that could possibly be better than Toy Story 3? (because that would be challenging to top). I guess there's one way to find out.
