The Lion King Side By Side

Yesterday the first teaser for the new Lion King came out and it was a shot for shot remake of the first trailer for the original film, released in 1994. While I don’t think the film itself will be shot for shot like the trailer was, it’s amazing to see how far animation has come in the last 25 years.

  1. I just saw that this morning! I've been thinking about it a lot.
On the one hand, it is amazing how animation has changed. And I don't ever want to complain about there being more art in the world. I like the idea of giving people a new arena to explore and new ways to create. This does look beautiful. I'm especially impressed by all the fur texture.
But... why make a shot-for-shot recreation of something that already exists? I really HOPE they don't make most of the movie like that. It's not even exactly shot for shot, because I think the original shots are a little tighter and more dramatic. I guess it's a good way to look at the relative merits of 2D and 3D animating. The 3D is more realistic, but I think the slightly wider shots make it look a little busy and flat somehow...
I love the Lion King! I really hope this comes out well...
