Spirited Away
This past Tuesday, Spirited Away was back in theaters and for me, it was the first time I saw it. I was blown away! Their use of "out of the blue" animation was perfect. "Out of the blue animation" is what I would describe as the moment a character breaking the rules of our world and having not been justified by their world, as far as we know. For example, the first time we see Yubaba turn into a bird and fly away, no one questions it but we should. Even though the rules of this ghost world are different than ours, we have not seen this yet, it doesn't necessarily break the rules of the world but rather expands on them as the movie goes on. This should be uncomfortable to the audience since our world has very strict rules such as "people can't fly". Throughout the movie, the world grows and grows into this truly free world where anything could happen. They are not defined by world rules and therefore truly embody what animation is as an art form.
I like thinking about 'rules of worlds' and how movie worlds can be different from our own and other movies. I think animation has even more freedom to bend these rules and create new and unique ones for their world. Spirited Away is a great example of this, great movie
