Scooby Doo
What is it about Scooby Doo, a cartoon that first appeared in the late 1960s and only ran for 25 episodes, that has so much staying power and room for adaptations? I'm not saying that every iteration of the Scooby gang is fantastic but there hasn't yet been one so bad that it killed the franchise for a few years or all together.
Is it the characters? The simple formula that can be done, re-done, and turned on it's head? Nostalgia? A mix of all three? Why is Scooby Doo the only cartoon from it's time that has stuck around for almost 50 years? Why do people love it so much?
Honestly that's a good question. I'm not sure why people love Scooby Doo so much, me being one of those people. I feel like people may enjoy it so much because it's comical and who doesn't love a talking dog? I think nostalgia is definitely a huge thing as well. But, is that really what has made the cartoon stick around for so long? I don't have the answer to this so it's interesting to see what other people might say to this!
ReplyDeleteI think its a mix of the fact that they really nailed the characters (having the serious and the goofy mix together so nicely), along with the fact that each episode is a mystery to be solved. This is the same reason that there are so many iterations of Sherlock Holmes in television still (whether it be in medical mysteries like House, or in crime shows like Monk, Law and Order, etc., or in shows and movies which literally write for a character named Sherlock Holmes.) There is an endless supply of mysteries to be solved, and of course these mysteries can be modernized for succeeding generations. When you add a dynamic caste on top of that you have entertainment gold, especially in Television!
ReplyDeleteI think the two main reasons are nostalgia and its formula. As someone who grew up watching the Scooby-Doo cartoons and movies, they hold a special place in my heart and I'm always interested in if there's going to be a new show or movie. But also the plot of each episode is extremely easy to replicate. A monster is scaring people, the gang shows up, they look for clues, they set a trap, catch the monster and reveal its identity. This formula is the main reason the show has not died in my opinion.
