Princess Mononoke, No one is good or bad

So, as I watched Princess Mononoke, I began to enjoy rooting for our main character, the prince. But, as the story progressed, and we met all the other characters, I saw that the prince was similar to nearly everybody. Every character in this movie, had motivations, good or bad, but also had flaws or morality. Typically, those who had good aspirations were heavily flawed. Or likewise, those with bad aspirations had morality. So often is it that we see characters in stories that are one side. We have our protagonist which is the definition of good. And then we have the antagonist, which is always the definition of evil. These plots, as exciting as they are when the final showdown takes place, are predictable to an extent. Plots with characters that are more humanistic and real, such as Princess Mononoke, are less predictable and tend to create a more suspenseful tale. All because of the characters being realistic rather than perfect.

  1. This is a really good point. I didn't think about it like that! If the characters were "perfect" the plot would for sure not be as interesting.
