Portrayal of Women in Princess Mononoke

I honestly haven’t watched too many anime films besides the ones shown in class but I can definitely tell that their portrayal of women is quite interesting. In “Princess Mononoke” I felt that the writer was shoving it in our face that they were trying to prove the point that women are strong, smart and independent. It just seemed so unnatural. The movie did do a good job showing that women are just as capable as men, but certain lines the characters said referring to women just didn’t sit right. Also why are women's bodies shown off a lot more than mens? There were certain parts of “Princess Mononoke” where you could see the breasts of some of the female characters and I did not understand what the purpose it was. Why women are hypersexualized in these films even though they are trying to make a point about women not just being objectified? I don’t get it.

  1. I too found the representations of women to be a bit over the top. I wasn't offended by it, but I certainly noticed the effort. I think the reason it fails to be "natural" is that the perspective of women being "strong and intelligent" came from a man (this might have happened multiple times). It came off as slightly condescending and playful rather than serious. I think, though, that princess mononoke and her wolf mother were self evidently strong and intelligent.
