Pokemon Detective Pikachu. A New Trend?
I know we talked a lot about animations being turned into live action films and how it has become a trend in recent years, but how about video games. Do you guys feel that production companies are just trying to find another cheap way to make money or is this some what different from turning animated films into live action films? Do you guys think that video games are going to start making more appearances into motion pictures? I haven't seen many so far (I think there was one based off of the Assassins Creed video game, but I'm not sure), but I actually think that there are going to be a lot more video game based films in the future.
I'm guessing many of you guys have already seen the trailer for the new Pokemon movie coming out. What do you guys think of it?

Hi Ryan,
ReplyDeleteactually, videogame movies have been coming out for decades now; it's nothing new. The reason we don't see as many of them, however, is because they're always terrible. 100% of them have been poorly received by both fans and audience members, including the Assassins Creed one. The reason for this is because, like you said, they're soulless cash grabs. There's never any passion in them, whether it's the Assassins Creed Movie, Rampage, Warcraft, Tomb Raider, etc. They all seem to miss the essence of what make the games great and instead just try to capitalize on their popularity.
What I appreciate about Detective Pikachu is that it's taking elements of the video game source material and appears to be doing something completely different with it. Then again, the exact same thing could be said about Super Mario Bros., and we all know how that turned out. But from the looks of the trailer, it looks like it could potentially be the best video game adaptation so far (admittedly, this is a pretty low bar at this point). But all I know is that come May, I'll be there to see it wildly succeed/fail.
