Pixar is a sequel machine
The release of the Toy Story 4 teasers resulted in crazy excitement from the general movie going public. While I have no doubts that Toy Story 4 will be a fun watch, I have some qualms with Disney's strategy for film production. Disney is showing a very "If it isn't broke, don't fix it" model for new content. Rather than coming up with new, unique ideas, the production company is making sequels of beloved films that they know will make money because of how successful the first ones were. Disney is all about the money nowadays rather than the content. With the exception of films like Coco and Inside Out, Disney-Pixar has been primarily producing sequels.
Don't get me wrong, the sequels are great, I just think that with the steady advancement of animation, Disney-Pixar is more worried about quantity than quality.

Yeah I'm pretty disappointed that they greenlighted a Toy Story 4, I'm afraid it will be like the Shrek series where it should have just been the trilogy but they made a fourth purely for money.
ReplyDeleteToy Story 4 is extremely unnecessary and I wholeheartedly believe that they made it solely to cash in on the franchise. This movie is coming out 9 years after the last one, which makes me doubt they had another entry in mind. If this next movie is not on the same level as the other 3 movies I will not be satisfied because if it's not money they made this movie for, then it had better be a damn good reason because I'm pretty angry that they decided to continue a story that, in my opinion, had about as perfect of an ending as you can get in a trilogy.
ReplyDeleteI can see what you're saying, but sometimes, and especially in this case, Pixar sequels give me the "Take my money, I want to see more from these characters" vibe. I believe that Toy Story 3 is better than 2, and maybe even better than the original, so as long as they improve upon what they have, I can't really complain. Of course, we have content like the Cars sequels, but we can always just ignore those, haha.
ReplyDeleteThis era of Pixar sequels is so strange to me because not to long ago, Disney had their direct to vhs/dvd sequels for every single property of theirs that came out, they were subpar but they were there. The Pixar sequels feel very much the same to me, lets take some of our most popular titles and make another one because if it shares the same name as the first one, people will see it. The Pixar ones are normally maintain the quality of the original in animation and story but they're still just cashgrabs.
