Not a fan of anime before this week
I
really hated anime before seeing Akira.
I
think I wasn’t really open to the idea of it because all I thought about was
Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh! (which I’m not even sure if that’s considered anime).
However, that’s just what came to mind and I was never a fan of that stuff as a
younger kid. When I found out we were learning about anime I literally rolled
my eyes, but thanks to Harrington showing us good anime films, my mind has changed.
Akira
was good, but I really loved Princess Mononoke. I think the reason I enjoyed
this movie, is because it was such a good story. It was brutally honest, and a
bit of a wakeup call, I would say. During his travels, Ashitaka sees humans ravaging the earth and
attempts to make peace, but the humans brings only
conflict.
So, with that, I
think there are a lot of metaphors within this film which is what makes it even
more interesting. I believe the core meaning behind Princess Mononoke is that the spirit of man corrupts nature.
Ultimately, the spirit of nature is weakened by the humans tearing down the
forest, which highlights the negative impact humans have on the destruction of
nature. It’s almost as if humans enjoy being destruction, and the only thing we
are doing is killing our own spirits.
That was a lot
for Thursday night, sorry y’all!!!!!
I definitely agree with you. Before this week, I really did not like anime. When Harrington told us we would be learning about it, I wanted to get through the topic as quickly as possible and move on. However, as you said, the films that were shown changed my mind. Although anime is still not a type of animation that I necessarily enjoy, it is not something that I am completely opposed to anymore.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to get more into Anime. I watched Death Note, but not much else in recent history. I really enjoy the intense storylines and imagery associated with anime. I think that was especially represented in Akira. I really enjoyed the intensity of emotion frequently represented, along with the humor that relieves some of that tension. After watching these films I will probably check out more of the anime series on netflix that I've seen. Also I really want to watch Spirited Away again. The last time I watched it I was like 7 and it really freaked me out.
