My Neighbor Totoro
I recently watched “My Neighbor Totoro” for the first time and I really enjoyed it. It was made in 1988 and I can’t believe how detailed it is for the time it was created. A couple of other things I noticed was the pace of the story and the characters. The characters were really likable and could have been played live-action. I think the entire plot of the story could have been played live action, it was a very slow paced movie. The dialogue and characters as well as the scenery could have been done very well with real actors and on location shoot. I really enjoyed Totoro’s character as well as his little cat bus, the white bunny-like things, and the mini Totoro’s. That part could not have been done live action and I think if it had been CGI’d in afterwards it would have lost the magic and cuteness of the drawing part.
I don't think this could be made live action specifically because of the little beasts. I think "My Neighbor Totoro" is based around innocence and I just don't see how you would translate Totoro over to live action without making it animated... using a puppet would either be creepy or gimmicky, like a weird sesame street.

ReplyDeleteI personally agree. The story line is too reliant on the flexibility of animation.
