Miyazaki's style
It's clear that Hayao Miyazaki has a very distinct style in both his direction and storytelling. But, if pressed to explain what it is, I don't think I could. It's not typically "anime," but it's definitely within that category. For starters, his characters have much rounder shapes and the pacing is a lot slower than most anime. But there's still something distinct about his style that fits with other anime. So where do we draw the line between what's anime and what's not?
It's also really difficult to draw! I've tried to do some artwork in Miyazaki's style before, and it's CRAZY hard to imitate. Simple shapes are deceptively challenging.
ReplyDeleteHis art is a bit reminiscent of older manga art, which had more of those big simple designs. Somehow that style doesn't usually get animated the same way, though. Like... look at the differences between the InuYasha manga art and the anime version. I wonder what the reasoning is.
