Miyazaki vs. Western Animation
Something that stuck with me from this week's reading was Miyazaki's response to the critic who argued his plot (in the comic book version of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind) to have oversimplified the plot of good vs evil. Miyazaki said: "I'm fed up with exposing the differences between people. That's what human nature's all about." He argues the significance of showing how people can live together and I find that very interesting in how it both differs and connects to Western themes. I thought that it was so interesting to point out the effect and significance of choosing between going with plot that focuses on the mob effect and choosing to blur the lines between good and evil-- ex. Dais in Mirai Shonen Konan is first depicted as a villain but later heroically lends his help to the protagonist, making his character more ambiguous.
