Is it unfair?
Has anyone ever realized that the winner of every Best Animated Oscar is either a Pixar or a Disney animated film? It's almost like they get an automatic Oscar every single year. I'm starting to get bothered by this, especially after we watched the behind the scenes on Loving Vincent. It shocks me that a movie like Loving Vincent, a grueling film that took years and years to make, can be trumped by an almost factory-produced animated film (I'm not saying they're bead by any means). I won't be shocked if Toy Story 4 is going to win an Oscar. My question is, does it seem unfair to you that Disney and Pixar wins and gets more recognized than a film like Loving Vincent? And would you guys like to see different animated films win Best Animated Feature Film?
I think you bring up a good point about the almost monopolization Pixar/Disney has taken with animation in the west. I think one of the reasons is the emotions and nostalgia we associate with Pixar films, a film like Loving Vincent put more emphasis on aesthetic and, whether intentionally or not, distances the audience from the emotional aspects of the plot.
ReplyDeleteIt is undeniably hard for these independent producers to compete against a titan like Pixar, but I think those who produced Loving Vincent certainly showed the world that there is still a bunch of producers who can make a more technically complex film than Pixar could. Sure, I bet CGI isn't easy to work with, but going frame by frame with oil paintings is surely more difficult to manage. I haven't seen the movie Coco and I've heard good things about it, but I think Loving Vincent should've won that Oscar due to it's creativity and the immense effort needed to create it.
