Here's Why Stan Lee Was Great

Stan Lee is an amazing man, and there's physical proof if you look at how much he expanded the superhero genre. Credited as the co-creator for many incredible superheroes with fantastic arcs. I see a lot of myself in Stan Lee- we both get our confidence from our overly supportive mothers, both of our significant barbers cut our hair, and we both really love telling compelling stories.

Stan was influenced by the Greats of creative writing and storytelling- Twain, Shakespeare, Wells, Dickens, and Doyle. He knew how to tell a compelling story over an enormous arc. Doyle's Sherlock Holmes's mystery books were (in my humble opinion) our first introduction to serialized storytelling. You could easily call Sherlock the first literary superhero. Dickens experimented with this form too in Great Expectations, and Shakespeare was in tune with what his audience wanted in his form of entertainment. Twain was an expert on social commentary; He knew how to use a metaphor in order to talk about serious issues in society. And Wells? A master of science fiction and fantasy, even before the genre was even created.

He also started out as an editor and made his way up. He understood format, and he understood his characters more than anybody else. That's why he has a lifetime contract with Marvel, and that's why since 1941, he's been Marvel Comics' greatest asset. He's gone against the CCA and the status quo to tell stories involving drug abuse, addiction, and alcoholism. That's why I think he deserves the hype- he's the only comic book artist to have ever received the American National Medal of the Arts. His Fantastic Four comic is considered the greatest of all time. He advocates for collaboration, especially in art.

Marvel has evolved from comics to a worldwide brand. Through film, television, and animation, these stories have been told for years and years. And over time, we've gotten more representation of these characters that we've seen on pages for decades. For some reason, that's really exciting to me. It's exciting to see live-action and animated adaptations.
