Don Bluth
When most people think of the animated movies that built their childhood most look to Disney. And well I can't lie, Disney was very big for me growing up as well, but my man Don Bluth often gets over looked. You probably know some of his movies and many mistake them for Disney films! Anastasia? That was Don Bluth! Secret of Nimh? Don Bluth! Land Before Time? Don Bluth, well at least the first one is. American Tail? Don Bluth! Thumbelina, sadly also Don Bluth. (Loved it as a child but it does not hold up well) All Dogs Go to Heaven! A Troll in Central Park! That was all Don Bluth.
So who is this man? Well he was one of the first big dudes before DreamWorks to start at Disney then say no thanks to the Disney format and make his own complex films. And well you might be thinking but hey wait he did Anastasia that's pretty Disney Princess format, and your right I guess. Don was finally pushed to make a Princess movie. He said alright fine, and made one of the best gosh darn movies in the sub genre.
What's your favorite Don Bluth movie? What cartoons built your childhood that weren't made by Disney?
Oh my gosh, Land Before Time was literally the basis of my childhood. That's wild, I had no idea who Don Bluth is. I think with animation it's hard to find names that you know because it's not as widely viewed as live action is. Children watch cartoons but they don't go out of their way to find out the name of the head animator. It seems that animation, like we discussed in class, it viewed as more as an entertainment medium rather than an art film for deeper appreciation.
ReplyDeleteFor the longest time as a kid I thought that Anastasia WAS a Disney movie. Then one day my sisters talking about Disney movies and I interjected with "hey what about Anastasia?" almost in unison they said "that's not Disney" and my mind was blown. There were animated films that weren't related in some tangential way owned by Disney?? Revolutionary! I didn't go out of my way to find out who did make it... by brain was just fractured by the concept that all animated movies didn't come from the same hive mind. It's weird to think that Don Bluth's stuff was so much a part of growing up, but I didn't even know he existed. I just sort of lumped all of these films together, but I in reality I probably watched just as much Don Bluth as I did Disney. Whacky.
