disney reboots
So, as many of you probably know, Disney has decided to reboot a lot of their old classic animated films. This sort of started with Maleficent (the live action movie about the villain from Sleeping Beauty) then definitely was set into motion with the release of the live action Cinderella (which I personally was really excited about until the trailers dropped).
With the release of the live action Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book the ball was really rolling; slated to come out in the next couple of years are a live action version of The Lion King, Dumbo, Mulan, Aladdin, Lilo and Stitch, Lady and the Tramp, The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, Snow White, The Sword and the Stone, and Peter Pan.
Firstly, why. Secondly, the majority of the films Disney is choosing to recreate in a live action setting can't function in our reality. Some of the new films could be done, but a majority of them will feature large amounts of animation (looking at you especial The Lion King), making them not live action remakes, but updated 3D animated remakes with a few changes to script and songs to make it different enough to justify rereleasing the same movie.
Maybe I'm just bitter, but I really wish they would stop because they've already wrecked two of my favorite Disney films from when I was younger with weird retellings and creepy looking "real" animation.

I agree with you, because I do not like the idea of them rebooting the originals because nothing is wrong with them! But, I do know that Disney is a huge money making franchise, and I believe that they are only doing it to make money, which is a shame. Not my favorite disney move.
ReplyDeleteI totally see where you are coming from and I agree with you. It's kind of ridiculous that Disney is doing this. But at the end of the day it's business. Whatever can make you money is going to be what drives the industry. It's a sucky way to look at things, but I feel like that's the sad truth. But I mean if they keep making it there must be something to it right? What makes it so attractive that you would want to rewatch a film, but in a different style? I'm still not sure about that answer.
ReplyDeleteIt is revenue. If you take a look at the most successful movies of all time in America, you'll notice that they are, for the most part, all either reboots, sequals, or based off of a book already written. It could be argued that there aren't many original ideas that actually make it to the big leagues (souce: https://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/world/ ). I imagine that the creators at Disney are looking back at the huge successes they have had in the past, and know that if they remake the movie, tons of people will want to go see it, either because they are excited, or because they want to see if it will match up to their childhood perception ("the magic") of the original film. This could be considered the mentality of "if it's not broken, don't fix it", but in this case, it applies to not really making new content.
ReplyDeleteThis is a harsh generalization of Disney filmmakers, but one that can be applied to the box office hits. This is the reason why art cinema theatres and film festivals are so important-- in order to bring new and original ideas to the screen.
