Could Akira translate over to live action?
I was so confused but also stunned at the ending of "Akira". It was so cinematic in a way I wasn't used to seeing in animated films. I think because of the area of the world that the film came from it had the opportunity to be tailed to more of an adult audience. When I went and saw one of my friends later on that day, we discussed the film and he told me that the movie was of course, beautiful, but it doesn't really make any sense because it is an 11 part manga series smooshed into one film. That is such a risk to take when making a film in general, let alone an animated film that takes so much time to create.
I was thinking a lot about whether or not this film would translate just as well over to live action, and I've come to the conclusion that it wouldn't. You would need animation to make this film what it is, it's impossible to give it that same beautiful composition without cheesy practical effects ruining that (and I am a HUGE fan of practical effects). I'm shivering at the idea of translating those creepy old babies into real life ugh.

It's super interesting how the U.S. has been trying to adapt Akira. I'm pretty sure that they've been trying to 'live-action and westernize' it for like three decades at this point. I keep on hearing about how some big-name director gets attached to it and then drops out a few months later for some creative difference thing. Right now Jordan Peele's in talks about it, but I have no idea if that's actually gonna stick. Personally I don't think it's gonna come out for a looooong time, if ever. I'm pretty sure if it actually does happen, it'd be really really tough to not utterly butcher the sourcce material. Here's a quick video by Harry Partridge that pretty much lays out what it'd potentially be like (https://youtu.be/jafd97yJFOI).
