Why do we desire realism in animation?

Animation is a medium of art where anything is possible. Realism is a double edged sword, people on one hand, desire completely unrealistic vessels, so they can project meaning. On the other hand, realism entails a very definite identity with which you can relate to humans in history to some degree.  When you take someone who has unconscious violent desires, and they exercise them through violent video games, do they want something 8bit (like Mario) or something like the newest Call of Duty, and even then, they want things more and more realistic.

VR is an example that shows the desire to mix animation with the physical. But it shouldn’t make sense that people desire animation to be as realistic as possible, but being tricked makes it what we enjoy.
