What's With All the Remakes?

So I think everyone at this point is aware that Disney seems to currently have a plan to remake each of their classic animated films, and my question is why? The majority of the remakes they've done so far have either had the exact same plots as their animated counterparts or simply didn't provide audiences with a good enough experience to consider remaking the film worth it. So, what's the point?

Well I think most people, myself included would say money. So far all the remakes seem to have done is give an excuse for people to go watch some of their favorite animated films done in live-action instead. And with the exception of the The Jungle Book, none of the remakes so far have really stood out as being as good as, if not better than, the original classic. So why does Disney keep making these movies if the general consensus is not all that positive. Well it seems to be because they are aware that people will go see the movie and it will make a lot of money.

I must express my disappoint in Disney for not using these remakes as opportunities to either tell a different side to the stories we know (without ruining the characters, *cough* Maleficent),  or improve on areas where the original may have faltered. I wish that they would make more of their remakes like they did The Jungle Book because that film felt different enough from the original to not be considered a rehash, but also told a story that many felt honored the original as well. Perhaps the problem is the director. Jon Favreau, the film's director, is known for his work on Elf, Iron Man, and Chef, has proven himself capable of directing a film like The Jungle Book. Perhaps the other remakes have not had directors that cared enough, or maybe they just were not right for the project.

I feel like Disney should be trying to take these stories in new directions and I don't see why they couldn't. If they ever remade Pinocchio that would be an excellent reason to go into darker territory, using more material from the book. Although something tells me modern Disney wouldn't be okay with that. But I hope they can get a grasp on a better set of ideas for their remakes, because I doubt they're going to stop now.

  1. I think that the point of remaking an animated film to a live action film is that there is just something appealing about seeing some of your favorite animated films played out in "real life". Like we said earlier in this class, we can relate to live action a lot more and we can almost see ourselves in the characters shoes. Everyone wants to be able to see themselves in a fantasy world like The Jungle Book.
