What makes these animated films so good??

Over the last couple of weeks of class we have watched various critically acclaimed animated films, including Logorama and Fresh Guacamole by PES.  The narratives of these films is not what distinguishes them from the crowd, as the criminal chase scene has been done in various films before and the idea of making guacamole doesn't sound like the interesting story in hindsight.  I believe that is it the use of animation to create that story using objects and symbols seen in our everyday lives that makes these animations so special.  Seeing massive brand logos personified into a logo-centered world turns out to be very visually appealing.  PES is especially good at picking out objects that represent other objects and using them to show some sort of process taking place.  Is there more to it than this?  Comment if you have any further ideas to elaborate upon.

  1. In Logorama, there is a point where Ronald McDonald is driving away from the cops and the thing that brings him to his ultimate doom is a Weight Watchers logo. I thought it was one of the best parts of that film and just brought those who noticed it even more into the film. But to add onto what you were saying, I don't know if that would be possible in a live action car chase scene. Ronald McDonald running from the cops gets stopped by a massive Weight Watchers sign just doesn't seem like something that would be created with camera and actors, at least not at the level Logorama did it. I agree animation of these everyday objects and symbols make these two films so cool and fun to watch.

  2. I 100% agree with you. I got sucked into Logorama because of the clever use of brand logos that they used in the animated film. If it were just a regular chase scene I would not have given it the same attention that I did with Logorama. I mean if you think about it it's just a cliche crime scene, but with all of the logos added it sucks you in. With Pes they also used a lot of clever puns like "dicing" the onions. I think another thing is that we are in awe. For me personally, the whole time I was questioning how they could have possibly created such a smooth stop motion film using an actual hand.
