What is the future of stop motion?

This was one of the questions that we were asked to discuss during class last Thursday. With my group, we discussed that although there is a future to stop motion, we can not see it evolving in the future. When we look back to some of the first stop motion animated films, they are relatively similar to those now. Of course, technology has come a very long way since the time of the first stop motion films, but the process is still very similar. I believe that that this is also a statement that can be easily argued and I would love to hear how peoples opinions differ regarding the future of stop motion.

  1. I agree to a certain extent. Yes, it makes sense for stop motion to die out, especially with CGI animation being so inexpensive while simultaneously looking more "life-like" than stop motion. However, I don't think this art form will ever die do to it's unique creative aesthetic. While it doesn't happen often, we seem to get a few big name stop motion films that become instant must see movies. One could argue that "Isle of Dogs" would be the last one, but I would say it was "Fantastic Mr. Fox". Either way, Wes Anderson's stop motion films have found a huge audience and for that reason I think they are open minded to seeing more of these films.
