Behind the Scenes

Watching some of these "behind the scenes" from stop motion features was very intriguing. Seeing how everything is made and how it works is fascinating.

I remember when I was little, I had a videotape of "Frog and Toad are Friends", made with stop motion. After the feature presentation was a ten-minute behind-the-scenes video of the film, which I always enjoyed watching. I was always fascinated with all the little things that had to be done in order to make the film what it was.

This lecture, and the videos, reminded me of that specific behind-the-scenes video. I found it on YouTube and rewatched it, and I understood more of the terms, and what the techniques were, since I'm now a film student, as opposed to the seven or eight year old me watching it and only starting to learn how films were made.

  1. I agree that the behind the scenes videos are some of the best parts of stop motion movies! I love seeing the tricks animators use to work around difficult scenes (the smoke in Coraline, for example, is cotton. And the waterfall in Fantastic Mr. Fox is cellophane). I love seeing the clay models come to life and I especially love seeing the countless hours of work that goes into it.
