VFX & Disney

To Animate is to bring to life. With that being said, there is clearly a divide in what we "bring to life" and how life like it is. CGI is very popular due to how real something can look. This animation style is great for things like horror movies and action thrillers, but when is it overused? Disney often uses VFX and CGI for their films as well, creating this hyper-real world. As an example, the water in Moana is unbelievably realistic in many ways, but it also seems to create a better than life version. I guess what I'm asking is if this is true animation. We have viewed many 2D works this semester, each of which had a unique voice and style, they were able to bring many different worlds to life. Seeing a movie like Moana, where everything looks realistic, is not hard to believe that it's "alive". The tricky part is making us see 2D drawings, abstract works, or anything that doesn't look similar to real life and bringing life to it.

  1. I also think it's questionable whether or not the animated water in Moana for instance should be considered animation due to how realistic it actually looks. Obviously it's being animated, but some people would argue that animation isn't meant to be realistic, there's supposed to be a crossed border that makes it clear that it isn't real life.
