Stop motion isn't going away

Stop motion was one of the first methods of animation. Even though it's tedious, time consuming, and expensive, there's something so incredible about watching a stop motion film. While a film in cgi can be incredible because of how real it may look--like the water in Moana or the feathers in the Pixar short Piper--all cgi films look very similar, regardless of what studio produces them. Every stop motion film is so different from the next because they're not focused on making hyper realistic water or a hyper hybrid film. There's so much room for creativity within stop motion and claymation films because even everyday objects like cotton can be used as smoke.
I also think that stop motion isn't going anywhere because the process of making a stop motion film is so simple. Really anyone can make a stop motion film, which is part of the appeal because you can see in front of you how the film is made.
We also discussed in class how some films are being made to look like they're stop motion, but they're actually cgi. This is part of the transition to cgi and it may be thought that even stop motion films aren't stop motion anymore. However, I think cgi that's pretending to be stop motion is an homage to that style of animation. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

  1. I agree, stop motion is not going away, but it is not going to stay in big motion pictures for long. There are examples of failed box office numbers with stop motion films (Kubo and the Two Strings) and considering the time that it takes to make each film it doesn't look like stop motion is going to stay in large motion pictures for long. However, like you said, anyone can make a stop motion film; they're easy to get the hang of, they still an appealing look to them (hence the reason why movies like the Lego Movie try to imitate the look of a stop motion film). If you look on YouTube you will see hundreds of stop motion videos made by young filmmakers. This is exactly where I think stop motion is going to thrive, in short films and home made movies.
