Spectacle of Stop Motion

Although stop motion has a certain aesthetic to it, the spectacle of the style is what draws attention. Sure, we could watch "Coraline" or "Fantastic Mr. Fox" as CGI animated films, but in the end, they won't have the same thrill. I opened by drawing a clear line between the aesthetic of stop motion and its spectacle. But, there isn't a line for this style of animation. The spectacle is the aesthetic. When I watch a stop motion film, I'm drawn in by the impressive movements and actions of objects on screen, instead of just being enticed by a narrative. If I go and watch "the Avengers: Infinity War", I'm drawn in by both the action on screen (the genre of film) and I almost forget how Thanos isn't a physical thing. Thanos is purely fiction, made in a computer. However, the quality of the CGI is so well done, that I forget about the animation almost entirely. My mind believes that everything on screen is real because of how well it all obeys physics and shows tiny details. When I watch "Coraline" and see characters with buttons for eyes I know that what I'm seeing isn't alive. The characters are fake and its obvious, but the charm that stop motion has, the spectacle it creates with its leftover footprints of the artist are what make it draw the audiences that it does.
