Smallfoot is interesting?

I didn't think I'd say this, but I actually enjoyed Smallfoot. It's fun. Don't @ me. The animation was strange, though. Most of the movie sticks to the attempted realism found in most modern animation, but the parts where it differs are important. The first thing I noticed was the characters' eyes. Their fur or hair look almost realistic sometimes, but the eyes look almost like 2D images pasted over 3D models, which is jarring to say the least.

The only time the animation becomes really abstract is during the few musical numbers. Here, shapes morph into each other and float around weightlessly. Interestingly, though, the proportions of the characters' bodies never change. Tiny stones become giant discs, which turn into glowing snails that become the sun, but the characters' bodies stay the same shape and relative size. I'm guessing that they made this decision to anchor the audience in reality, even though these sequences are very much not so.

  1. I was surprised to find myself in the same boat. I thought that 'wonder' song was so beautifully animated and was the stand out part of the whole movie

  2. I was actually thinking of writing about Smallfoot as well! This film was much better than I was anticipating and I don't even know why. I totally agree with you that it did basically stick to having some form of realism (as much as you could with an animated musical film about a yeti). There was a scene where they broke out in a musical number and it was normal with them running around the icy mountain. But then, next thing you know they are in space. This was really the only time the film kind of took me out of what was going on because it was like my brain said, "What the hell just happened?".

  3. This made me so happy to hear that other people liked the movie! I loved it very much to be honest, I thought it was fun, cute and pleasant to watch, which I feel was the main point for the filmmakers to give off. I thought the times when you really noticed the animation was definetly the musical numbers like you stated, but I didn’t think it took away from the reality of the film because it was just so magical to begin with. Thanks for stating your opinion on what you thought of it because I really thought it was a great movie and I was pleasantly surprised!
