Paranorman Process

I was in awe while watching the stop motion process of creating the film Paranorman. Although we already know how stop motion animation works, seeing the actual process at that scale really brings it to reality. The amount of work and detail that goes into creating films like that is absolutely stunning and unbelievable. Seeing the process makes you truly appreciate the time and effort that these animators put in to create one feature length film.
The main scene that really amazed me was when they described how they did the scene where the zombies are coming out of their graves. The spit and the rocks flying in the air was such a small detail that made the scene seem so much more realistic.

  1. I completely agree with what you said about the amount of thought and process that has to go into stop motion, especially the fact that anything that moves within the film must be suspended in the air somehow (ex. the zombie drool). Something that amazes me about the skills of animators is the ability to keep the movement/the personality of each character consistent when working with an array of animators.

  2. I agree that these animators put a lot of effort to put even the smalless detail stand out. But is it necessary? When they were talking about how they had wires suspended close to the puppets of little things of dirt to add detail to the scene I was honestly wowed but was that necessary? Doing a stop motion feature film is hard enough. Such a small details could have been added in post and it would have probably saved them a couple hours of animation and headaches. Now I understand that in doing this in post goes against the spirit of stop motion animation, but it was such a minimal detail that I feel they could have been tackled in post production. Work smart, and hard.
