Mature animation vs. "Animation for Adults"

If we've learned anything in this class, it's that animation isn't just for kids. Animation, like any art medium, can convey any emotion or experience the artist wants. However, it's still wildly impressive when an animated film can use animation to convey heavy, complex, mature themes better than a live action film. Because of this, I'd like to discuss the differences between "mature" animation and "animation for adults". I can't think of any better films to compare for this example than Waltz with Bashir and Logorama

While I though both films were creative and impressive in their own rights, I thought Waltz with Bashir used animation and color in incredibly moving and impact ways that I'd never seen done before with animation. Though the colors were surreal and trippy, they were also incredibly immersive. The film would not have had the same impact had it been made in live action. Logorama wouldn't have had the same impact if it were live action either, but what makes Waltz with Bashir mature animation and Logorama animation for adults? And what's the difference between the two? Mature animation tackles complex, adult themes without talking down to the audience. Mature animation makes the audience think, it gives them something to take away from the film. Animation for adults, however, is simply animation that shouldn't be shown to children. It's animation with aggressive cursing, sexual themes, or violence. Children's shows can be mature animation, if they tackle heavy themes while treating their audience with respect. While, again, I believe both films are well done in their own rights, mature animated films are far more rare than animated films for adults. TONS of animated shows and movies have aggressive swearing and shock humor in them now a days, but so few handle themes of depression, war, guilt, etc. This is why Waltz with Bashir made a much greater impact on me than Logorama, and, ultimately, why I'll remember it more.

  1. I like this aesthetic analysis. It uses difference to get to an important understanding about types of animation.
