Have you ever noticed that so many cartoon characters are wearing gloves? What's up with that?

It goes all the way back to early animation. When they had to redraw every frame, it was important to make all the shapes rounded and easily repeated. The rounded gloved hand was an easy way to draw a hand over and over again. Also, the white hand against the black background makes it easy to see the hand gestures from afar, heavily exaggerating movements.
Another reason is that they wanted to give the animals humanlike hands so they could pick things up and such, but it would've looked weird for an animal to have human hands, so they landed on gloves.
Wow I never thought about that-- it's really cool how there's both an aesthetic and practical reason behind this.
ReplyDeleteI actually watched a Vox video a couple of months ago which talked about white gloves and why so many animated characters wear gloves. That's actually exactly what they said. It takes too much time to draw out actual hands and it is wayyyy easier to draw rounded shapes rather than shapes with angles. Which is the reason why so many animated characters are so round.
