Disney

In class last Thursday, we had group discussions about whether or not Disney is going to keep making live action movies of older animations and whether or not it's a good idea. I was super against Disney doing this initially, until someone in my group made a good point. Some people just like to see the art of acting and this could be the reason that Disney keeps making live action movies. People would argue that there is a feeling you get from watching someone perform a character that you sometimes cannot get from animation.

  1. My group talked a lot about if it's possible to recreate an actor's performance perfectly with animation or not. We were really divided on it - seems to be a controversial topic. Is it only possible to get truly compelling realism with a motion captured actor, or can it be drawn, or neither?
Thinking of acting as an art is a good point. I think that's something we seem to lose track of in this class sometimes. Live action films absolutely aren't reflections of "true" reality, are they? They can be just as meticulously constructed as animation, from the background visuals to the performances.

  2. I think that they should go back to their old ways of animation. Not completely, obviously, but I know so many people, including myself, that enjoy the black and white micky mouse films. It is unfortunate that its "out of style" to make film like that. I believe we should give credit to the beginning of Disney animation because, at the end of the day it is what started everything.

  3. Personally, I don't think we're gonna see a decline of live-action Disney remakes anytime soon. They've still got like 80 years worth of reference material to draw from, and when you take into consideration the monstrous box office success of Beauty and the Beast, I don't see Iger pulling any plugs for quite some time. I mean, the way I see it, if you don't have any interest in seeing live-action The Rescuers Down Under, there's plenty of other films you could watch instead. I also don't think that a remake in any case devalues the original. I'm as anxious as the next person for the Aladdin remake, but the beauty of it all is that even if Guy Ritchie lets us all down, I can always just rewatch the original version.
