Culture and film
Today in class a question was posed: is what we watch what we grew up with? Did the culture we fit into shape what films we watch? I agree with the statement to an extent. Personally, I believe it it more likely for someone to watch what they grew up with rather than something from before their time. Something that supports this argument lies within the media. We constantly hear and see advertisements that push us to watch movies that are out now, about to be released, etc… I have never seen a commercial that is trying to convince me to watch a film that came out in the 70’s. There is just no promotion in the media for old movies. The closest thing I can think of that supports movies from decades ago are remakes. For example, the “IT” movie has just been recently remade. But even with these kinds of films, there is no advertisements for the old version. Nothing is telling me to “watch the first version” so I guess that they aren’t actually supporting movies from other generations… they are just connected to them. Also, films that are being released right now can tie into modern day society, which in turn can make the audience feel like we can connect to them. It is easier to watch films that we understand and connect to than films that are radical to us
