Coraline

I was scrolling through Facebook the other day and found a post on non-scary Halloween movies you can watch and "Coraline" was one of them. I immediately thought this was incredibly inaccurate-- "Coraline" was one of the scariest films of my childhood and to this day, I'm still creeped out by the button eyes. After reading the article I went on Netflix to rewatch the film and had to stop after the opening sequence. Having not seen the film in so many years, I had forgotten that it began with a montage of skeleton hands ripping apart and re-stuffing a doll. Despite how creepy it is, there's something calming about the way stop-motion filters out the horrors of stitching a smile and keeps you balancing on the line between horror and a child's film.

  1. I totally agree, Coraline was one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. I am really easily scared, but there was something so creepy about Coraline that I think it would scare anyone. I think this is one of those movies where the animation actually enhances and adds to the story and make sit scary because the world and stuff with the button eyes was something that would not have looked as good in live action.

  2. I think one of the main reasons Coraline is often placed into the non-scary Halloween movies category is because it is animated and as such, is associated with being a children's movie. The book the film is based on is not considered a children's book, it is categorized as a dark fantasy. The reason this film isn't seen as a more mature animated movie I think largely lies in there not being any swearing or outright gore in the film. People are more than willing to admit that parts of animated movies scared them when they were younger, the Pink Elephants scene from Dumbo, the clown from The Brave Little Toaster; but no one wants to admit that the entirety of a movie seen as children's entertainment was able to scare and unnerve them. If Coraline had been made as a live action film, people wouldn't have such a problem with admitting that the movie is actually scary.

  3. Coraline is definitely a creepy film, but it is absolutely scary. The imagery alone is beyond frightening to child. Guess it depends on your mindset going in?
