Claymation takes too long

We've been discussing time a lot in class. I've always been a huge fan of Wallace and Gromit and Gumbo, both being created with claymation and both taking a large amount of time. To take a lump of clay and form it into a sculpture is impressive enough but to create a "moving" clay statue is even more so. To truly understand the time commitment I must direct you all towards season 4 episode 11 of Parks and Recreation, where Ben creates his own claymation movie. He states that he has worked on it for many days and finally shows his friend the result. The "Movie" is around 5 seconds long.

  1. I also am intimidated about how long it takes to make a claymation film- it took 15 months to make Wallace and Gromit which is wild. After watching a claymation film I often wonder if it's worth it. While the medium is unique and gives it that "look" that a lot of us love about claymation, why couldn't another, less time consuming medium be used.

Anyways heres a video on the making of Wallace and Gromit that I thought was kind of cool https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fA71niaKnQQ

  2. Making claymation does sound like it takes longer, especially since mostly, if not all the time, they have to build the set, and work the lighting, and lots of other factors related more to live action than to hand drawn animation. Whenever I see claymation, I think to myself "Imagine how much time it took to make all of this, or just this one part."

  3. I do think something I'm learning more is through the films in class is that it really is a lengthy process. The scene has to be set, the setting has to be conceptualized and created, the characters have to look just right and then the movement obviously takes forever. It's kind of amazing just how much thought has to go into something that takes no time when actually watching it on screen. It's more similar to the process of live action filmmaking than I ever thought.
